Introduction and Mission

The WKProject is the combined efforts of Gwen, a young New Zealander who resides in Melbourne Australia, and a local Tanzanian called Janet Kiwia, who has passionately supported the needy in her own neighbourhood of Kawe for many years. The WKProject was also an idea generated by Janets work-place WORLD JET TRAVEL AND TOURS. The entire staff at this local Tanzanian travel company have been off-setting profits into a charity account for years now. So the WKProject is also about two-workplaces; Gwen's workplace, THE SPORTS INJURY CLINIC - Australia and WORLD JET TRAVEL AND TOURS- Tanzania, coming togther over a common-goal; Breaking poverty cycles.

The WATOTO KWANZA Project is a project listed with GVN Foundation. GVN Foundation supports past-volunteers, such as The Sports Injury Clinics Physiotherapist Gwen Harrop (nee. Jones), who want to continue to help the communities they volunteered in. www.gvnfoundation.org. We also have assistance from Rotary and Children First Foundation.

This project is about breaking the poverty cycle in a particular slum region in Tanzania. (for further info see ‘Background’ – ‘where’)

The key component of this project is education. It is a well-known concept that education breaks poverty cycles. Education provides people with the tools to one-day work effectively and earn an income. It also teaches people how to use their resources efficiently and how to care for themselves and others.

Our mission is simply….

'Watoto Kwanza' -  a swahili slogan meaning 'children come first'. Giving children priority to over-come their individual hurdles to gain a better start in life.

Ku Shinda:  ‘To excel, conquer or overcome’ poverty in the Kawe region by empowering education.

(swahili verb)
